We use 304 (18-8) anodized stainless steel screws for our CQs. It was brought to our attention that these were magnetic and therefore not stainless. We test our screws for magnetism, but we accept a small amount of magnetism as part of the screw maching process....

You dont have to have a damaged vent to install a CQ to protect it. A CQ simply slides over existing flashing and doesnt penentrate the vent, so there is no trimming necessary Makes the roof look better also. So consider protecting your new roof and buy some...

If you want to see picture of a large squrrel check out a Fox Squirrel. The first one I saw I thought a badger was running across the fence. Not real common, but they are around.
