Why do we have plumbing vents?

Some has asked why homes have plumbing vents. These vents serve two primary functions. The first and primary one is to allow air to come into the plumbing system to and displace the waste water when its flushed. The second purpose is to allow smelly and sometimes explosive sewer gasses to be vented out of the home.
