Lead flashing has been around a long time. However, its fallen out of favor in most of the country due to cost and potential environmental impacts. In my opinion its still the best way to seal a vent, it will last the life of the building if protected from squirrels. But now its pretty much only used in Florida and the Southern US. This is because plastic based flashings fail under intense sun due to the UV light, and it rains cats and dogs down here. So lead is still the preferred material in these areas. Its still sporadically used elsewhere, check your roof and see. If you got lead, get some Critter Quitters to protect it, they will also last decades and you wont have to worry about leaks or critters as long as you have the house.
