Someone asked why we have plumbing vents. They serve two primary purposes. First, they allow air to displace the water that is flushed from the structure at the toilet, shower, sink, and washing machines. Without them the water would simply sit and not go anywhere. Second, they allow sewer gasses, which smell bad and are often explosive, to be vented to atmosphere.
